  • Description

The wife of the Mauritanian President, Madame Mariem Ould Daddah, has been addressing a series of rallies, urging support for the CNSCF, a national commission to help soldiers and their families. On Tuesday (27 September) Mme Daddah addressed a rally in Nouakchott, as there was a report of more fighting in the Western Sahara.

SYNOPSIS: Massive crowds turned up for the meeting and authorities even had to put up tents in the city square to house some of the thousands who'd trekked there. Mme Daddah told the crowd of the great importance now placed on the national commission 'for the help of fighters and their families for the defence of the country'. And she said, the commission was now especially important in view of the war which had been imposed on the country by Algeria......or what she called the "illegal, dictatorial and teetering regime of Boumedienne".

For the listening Mauritanians, already aware of the continuing conflict with the Polisario Front, Mme Daddah's address took on added significance with a report that Polisario guerrillas had killed 62 Mauritanian soldiers in a clash in the Western Sahara.
