  • Description

JOHANNESBURG'S INDIAN COMMUNITY RECEIVED A SHOCK ON MAY 24. WITH THE NEW THAT THEIR TOWNSHIP, PAGEVIEW, HAD BEEN PROCLAIMED A WHITE GROUP AREA. THIS MEANS THAT THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY LIVING THERE WILL HAVE TO MOVE.

PAGEVIEW HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MAIN INDIAN TRADING CENTRES IN JOHANNESBURG FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS. A LEADER OF THE COMMUNITY COMMENTED" "WE ARE DISMAYED. THIS MEANS ECONOMIC DISASTER FOR CLOSE ON 5,000 INDIANS IN THE AREA, APART FROM THE LOSSES WHICH WILL BE SUFFERED IN OTHER DIRECTIONS".

SOME 2,500 INDIANS RELY ON THE TOWN'S TRADE FOR THEIR LIVING, AND ANOTHER 2,500 LIVE THERE. TOTAL FINANCIAL LOSS TO THE COMMUNITY IS ESTIMATED AT GBP5 MILLION.

PAGEVIEW WAS SET ASIDE FOR NON-WHITES IN 1902. IN 1941, PARLIAMENT CARRIED A RESOLUTION PROVIDING FOR FREEHOLD RIGHTS. THERE ARE TODAY 352 LEASEHOLD STANDS AND 24 FREEHOLD.

FILM INCLUDES A SOF TALK BY YUSUF CACHALIA, A FORMER SECRETARY OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN INDIAN CONGRESS AND A LEADER OF THE PAGEVIEW COMMUNITY, WHO EXPLAINS THE SITUATION.
