Background: THE GURKHA INDEPENDENT PARACHUTE COMPANY, ONE OF THE TOUGHEST AND MOST EXPERIENCED OF THE UNITS INVOLVED IN THE BORNEO BORDER FIGHTING DURING THE THREE YEARS OF CONFRONTATION, HAVE RECEIVED THE HEADGEAR COVETED BY EVERY BRITISH SOLDIER WHO EVER STRAPPED ON A PARACHUTE - THE RED BERET AND BADGE OF THE AIRBORNE FORCES.

UP TILL NOW THE 129-STRONG COMPANY HAVE WORN A SELECTION OF BADGES AND DIFFERENT COLOURED BERETS AS THEY ARE DRAWN FROM VARIOUS UNITS IN THE GURKHA BRIGADE.

AT THEIR BASE IN KLUANG, MALAYA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), THEY PARADED BEFORE MAJOR GENERAL A.G. PATTERSON, 17 DIVISION COMMANDER, WHO INSISTED ON PERSONALLY HANDING EACH MAN HIS NEW BERET AND SHAKING HIS HAND.

THEN, EVERYONE SUPPLIED, MAJOR JOHN CROSS, THE COMMANDING OFFICER, GAVE TWO ORDERS: "REMOVE HEADRESS" AND "REPLACE HEADRESS". THE OLD CAME OFF AND THE NEW WENT ON. THREE RANKS OF JUNGLE GREEN CAPPED IN RED.

IT IS THE FIRST TIME IN THE BRITISH ARMY THAT GURKHAS HAVE WORN THE AIRBORNE INSIGNIA THOUGH DURING WORLD WAR TWO, TWO GURKHA PARACHUTE BATTALIONS IN THE INDIAN ARMY WORE THE RED BERET.

THE GURKHA INDEPENDENT PARA COMPANY WEARS A GURKHA BRIGADE FLASH BEHIND THE WINGED BADGE.

THEIR CLOSEST COUNTERPART IN THE BRITISH ARMY IS THE GUARDS INDEPENDENT COMPANY OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT BUT THE GURKHA PARAS, BECAUSE THEY REMAIN IN THE GURKHA BRIGADE, ARE THE ONLY MEN OUTSIDE THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT TO WEAR THEIR BERET AND BADGE.
