    Two men, said to be armed with guns and dynamite,hijacked a South African airways plane on a flight from salisbury, Rhodesia to Johannesburg, South Africa Wednesday (24 May).

    The pilot said that the hijackers threatened to blow up the plane if it landed in South Africa. the plane returned to Salisbury and the 50 passengers and six crew were allowed to leave.

    The hijackers selected dive male passengers and four crew as hostages. After some uncertainty about their destination, the hijackers decided on Blantyre in Malawi.

    The hostages escaped while their captors were being diverted by an official. On Friday (26 May) both men were captured.

    Three of the passengers released in Salisbury talked to a reporter about the hijack and their release. The three men were from Australia: John Conley and Peter Shearer from Adelaide, and John Smith from Queensland.
