    THE DEMONSTRATIONS DREW WARNING FROM ACTING PRESIDENT GENERAL SUHARTO THAT FIRM ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN AGAINST PEOPLE TRYING TO DISTURB PUBLIC ORDER.

    THE STUDENTS SURROUNDED THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING HURLING INSULTS AND DEMANDING A REDUCTION IN THE PRICE OF RICE.

    ARMED TROOPS WERE CALLED IN TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION AND AFTER ORDER HAD BEEN RESTORED THE STUDENTS ENTERED THE BUILDING WHERE THEY HAD TALKS WITH AN ARMY OFFICER.

    GENERAL SUHARTO WAS QUOTED BY THE OFFICIAL ANTARA NEWS AGENCY AS SAYING THAT THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS HAD POLITICAL, NOT ECONOMIC MOTIVES.

    THE PRESENT RICE SUPPLY WAS SUFFICIENT UNTIL MARCH, THE INDONESIAN LEADER ADDED.
