Background: The tombstone over the grave of Dr. Theodor Benjamin Herzl - spiritual founder of modern political Zionism - standing on the highest hill of Israeli, Jerusalem, was unveiled July 14. Premier Ben Gurion was among those present to see the unveiling performed by Knasset Speaker Kadish Luz on behalf of President Ben-Zvi, who was on holiday abroad.
After the ceremony, people from all over the country placed small bags with earth from their places of residence all around the grave. Afterwards guests filed past to pay their respects. An army guard of honour and members of various Israeli youth movements were in attendance. Earlier, the nearby Herzl Museum had been officially opened.
Herzl died and was buried in Vienna in 1904. His remains were transferred to Israel in 1950, and his burial place was made a national shrine.
