Background: AS IS TRUE FOR MOST ARMIES THE ENGINEER CORPS OF THE ISRAELI ARMY IS ONE OF ITS MAJOR SUPPORTING FORCES. WHILE VARIOUS OTHER UNITS MAY HAVE TIME OFF, THE ENGINEERS ARE WORKING FOR MOST OF THE TIME, ON ALL BORDERS. THE TRAINING THE ENGINEERS RECEIVE IS THOROUGH WITH THE FINER POINTS OF THEIR TRADE BROUGHT HOME IN THE FIELD UNDER REALISTIC CONDITIONS.

THE PARTICULAR STATIC SITUATION OF THE ISRAELI ARMY AT THE MOMENT HAS CALLED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TECHNIQUES IN MILITARY ENGINEERING. THE ENGINEERS' METHODS AND EQUIPMENT, SOME BORROWED FROM OTHER ARMIES AND SOME IMPROVED OR DEVELOPED FROM SCRATCH, ALSO SERVE WHEN THE ISRAELI ARMY IS ON THE MOVE.

THE ENGINEERS BUILT THE BAR LEV LINE, AS THE LINE OF FORTIFICATIONAL ALONG THE SUEZ CANAL HAS COME TO BE KNOWN; THEY BUILT A ROAD UP MT. HERMON, ONE OF THE HIGHEST THE AREA. THE ENGINEERS ALSO GO INTO ACTION WITH INFANTRY AND MOTORISED UNITS CHECKING ROADS, CLEARING HOUSES WHEN NECESSARY AND DOING SUCH DEMOLITION WORK AS IS REQUIRED.

ISRAELI ARMY ENGINEER UNITS RECENTLY UNDERWENT TRAINING IN MINE-LAYING AND MINE-DETECTION TECHNIQUES. THE MEN ALSO ADDED SECTIONS OF A BAILEY BRIDGE TO AN EXISTING STRUCTURE AND LEARNED HOW TO USE THEIR WEAPONS.

THE SOLDIERS ALSO TOOK PART IN AN EXERCISE RECREATING THE CONDITIONS FOUND WHEN UNITS MOVE ACROSS THE ISRAELI BORDER AFTER SUSPECTED COMMANDO GROUPS. DURING THE EXERCISE, THE TRAINEES APPROACHED A GROUP OF HOUSES, FLUSHED OUT "HOSTILE" FORCES AND BLEW UP A "COMMAND POST".
