  • Description

After a long drive through the magnificent Kenyan mountain side, the Queen Mother was filmed opening a new mountain road in the Aberdares.

From the royal train at Naivasha, on the floor of the Great Rift valley, she drove up the Aberdares - formerly a Mau Mau hide-out-site - to a point 10,500 feet above sea level. There she cut a green tape to open a new track through the area.

Later the Queen Mother had a picnic lunch on the banks of the Gura River where she met Superintendent Ian Henderson, leader of a famous group that helped to beat the Mau Mau.

In the evening she stayed at The Treetops Hotel, one of the most famous of African wild game observation points. From the verandah the Queen Mother watched rhinoceros, bush buck, wart hogs and other game drinking together at the waterhole 45 feet below the hotel.

It was in the previous treetops hotel, burned down by Mau Mau in 1954, that Princess Elizabeth learned of the death of her father, King George V1 and her own accession to the Throne.
