    THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH TODAY (WEDNESDAY) INSPECTED A GBP1 MILLION SATELLITE EARTH STATION WHICH MAY BE USED TO RECEIVE MAN'S FIRST WORDS FROM THE MOON.

    THE STATION HAS BEEN BUILT AT RIVENHALL, ESSEX, BY THE BRITISH COMPANY, CABLE AND WIRELESS LIMITED - ONE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST COMMUNICATION COMPANIES.

    IT IS UNDERGOING TESTS BEFORE BEING SHIPPED TO ASCENSION ISLAND IN THREE WEEK'S TIME TO PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN AMERICA'S APOLLO PROJECT FOR LANDING A MAN ON THE MOON.

    ITS 42 FOOT (12.8 METRE) DIAMETER AERIAL, BUILT BY THE MARCONI COMPANY, WILL RELAY SIGNALS FROM SATELLITES TO APOLLO HEADQUARTERS AT AND OVER, MAINE, AND IS EXPECTED TO BE OPERATIONAL IN SEPTEMBER.

    OVER 100 TONS OF EQUIPMENT FOR THE PROJECT HAVE ALREADY BEEN SHIPPED TO ASCENSION. SOME OF THE AERIAL EQUIPMENT FOR THE PROJECT HAVE ALREADY BEEN SHIPPED TO ASCENSION. SOME OF THE AERIAL EQUIPMENT AND LANDLINE CABLE IS ON ITS WAY AND THE FINAL 25-TON SHIPMENT, INCLUDING THE AERIAL STRUCTURE, WILL BE SENT IN JULY.

    A TEAM OF 40 ENGINEERS WILL THEM FLY TO THE ISLAND TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT. MARCONI IS THE ONLY BRITISH COMPANY TO RECEIVE ORDERS FOR COMPLETE GROUND STATIONS FOR BOTH MILITARY AND CIVIL SATELLITE SYSTEMS.
