  • Description

Fire broke out, Aug 12, aboard the 10,000-ton cargo vessel "Scottish Star" of the Blue Star Line as she lay moored in King George V Dry Dock, London, to be repaired.

Ten fire-engines pumped water into the ship while sixty firemen, hampered by dense smoke and fumes, attacked the outbreak which started in the insulation surrounding one of the holds. The vessel usually carries frozen meat.

A strong breeze made conditions worse and the firemen, wearing smoke masks, had to stumble about in complete darkness at the bottom of the hold. Two hours later the fire was under control.
