THE 28-YEAR-OLD WOLVERHAMPTON DRAUGHTSMAN BECAME THE FIRST BRITON TO WIN A GOLD MEDAL IN THE 5,000 METRE EVENT BY BEATING OLE RITTER OF DENMARK. PORTER CLOCKED SIX MINUTES, 5.93 SECONDS COMING IN AHEAD OF RITTER'S SIX MINUTES, 13.97 SECONDS IN THE FINAL.

    RITTER BEGAN STRONGLY AND AFTER TWO CIRCUITS WAS 10 METRES UP, BUT AFTER TWO FURTHER CIRCUITS PORTER HAD ERASED THE DEFICIT. BY THE SIXTH CIRCUIT. PORTER WAS 2.6 SECONDS AHEAD AND FROM THIS POINT ONWARDS WAS ABLE TO STEADILY INCREASE HIS ADVANTAGE.

    ITALY'S GIUSEPPE BEGHETTO WON THE MEN'S PROFESSIONAL SPRINT TITLE. IN THE FINAL, HE DEFEATED BELGIUM'S PATRICK SERCU, THE TITLE HOLDER, 2-0. BEGHETTO, TWICE PREVIOUSLY WORLD CHAMPION, BROKE AWAY 300 METRES FROM HOME IN THE FIRST HEAT AND SERCU COULD NOT CLOSE THE GAP, LOSING BY HALF A WHEEL.

    IN THE DECIDING HEAT SERCU BROKE FIRST 400 METRES FROM THE LINE, BUT BEGHETTO KEPT COOL AND WAS AT THE BELGIUM'S SHOULDER AS THEY ENTERED THE FINAL 200 METRES.

    THE ITALIAN FLASHED ONTO THE INSIDE AND WAS ABLE TO RETAIN A NARROW LEAD BY A FEW CENTIMETRES ALONG THE HOME STRETCH, WINNING HIS GOLD MEDAL IN 11.93 SECONDS.
