    A tally 27-year-old Ugandan woman in a flowing black and gold gown broke 900 years of tradition on Thursday (23 January) when she presented her credentials to Pope Paul to become the first woman Ambassador accredited to the Holy See.

    Miss Bernadette Olowo is her country's Ambassador to Bonn and she flew to Rome at the beginning of the week to present her credentials.

    President Amin had appointed her Ambassador to West Germany only a month before.

    After presenting her documents Miss Olowo -- who is a Catholic -- spoke with newsmen at Rome Airport.
