On the occasion of November 1973 Polytechnic School uprising which marked the beginning of the end of the Dictatorship, the National Unions of Greek Students organized a three-day celebrations at the School.
As a climax of these celebrations, the Students Unions planned a huge protest march to the U.S. Embassy, marking the fourth anniversary of the "heroic revolt of the students" against the american-supported Greek Junta Government.
The students stressed that "the People and Youth will isolate the forces of subjugation and conservatism and will delegate the leadership to those who are inspired by the message of the Polytechnic School and consistently embrace the great expectations of the Youth and People".
Athens police banned the march based on information that anarchists will attempt to attack the American Embassy and thus create troubles uptown, inspite the Unions assurances that students are in a position to keep order in whatever manifestation they organize, calling on the Government to allow the "peaceful" march to the U.S.Embassy.
The whole of Athens Police Force was on the alert since early this afternoon in an effort to prevent any attempt of the students marching uptown. Particularly, the U.S. Embassy was strongly guarded by policemen and armoured cars.
