    MORE UNITED STATES MARINES ARRIVED TODAY (TUESDAY) AT THE DA NANG AIR BASE, IN SOUTH VIETNAM, TO BRING THE NINTH MARINE EXPEDITIONARY BRIGADE THERE UP TO ITS FULL STRENGTH OF 3,500 MEN.THE ADVANCE PARTY OF 1,400 MARINES ARRIVED YESTERDAY BY AIR AND IN AMPHIBIOUS LANDING CRAFT.

    THE MARINES WHO ARRIVED IN SOUTH VIETNAM YESTERDAY COMPROMISED TWO BATTALIONS.ONE BATTALION WAS AIRLIFTED FROM OKINAWA IN AN OPERATION COMPLETED IN FOUR HOURS.AS THE AMERICAN TRANSPORT 'PLANES CAME IN THEY WERE FIRED ON BY VIET CONG, BUT THE ONLY DAMAGE WAS A BULLET HOLE IN THE WING OF ONE 'PLANE.

    BY LATE AFTERNOON, MOST OF THE OTHER BATTALIONS HAD BEEN PUT ASHORE IN HEAVY SEAS AT A BAY ONE MILE (1.6 KILOMETRES) NORTH OF DA NANG.VIETNAMESE GIRLS GARLANDED THE MARINES WITH FLOWERS AS THEY CAME ASHORE FROM LANDING CRAFT.

    THE 3,500 MARINES ARE NOW DIGGING IN TO ESTABLISH A DEFENSIVE PERIMETER AROUND THE STRATEGIC AIR BASE.THEY ARE THE FIRST AMERICAN GROUND COMBAT TROOPS ASSIGNED TO HELP SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT FORCES IN THEIR STRUGGLE AGAINST THE VIET CONG.

    ALREADY THERE ARE 23,500 UNITED STATES MILITARY PERSONNEL IN SOUTH VIETNAM, BUT THESE WERE ASSIGNED AS MILITARY ADVISERS.THE ROLE OF THE MARINES IS CONFINED TO DEFENDING THE DA NANG BASE AND THE HAWK AIRCRAFT MISSILES STATIONED THERE.

    (IN PEKING YESTERDAY, A SPOKESMAN FOR THE LEFT-WING SOUTH VIETNAM NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT REJECTED THE POSSIBILITY OF A NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT IN VIETNAM WHILE AMERICAN FORCES REMAINED THERE).
