Background: The ocean cruiseship, the S.S. Yarmouth Castle, burned and sank 110 miles of Miami, Florida with heavy loss of life.

The Yarmouth Castle loaded with 550 passengers bound or holiday weekend in the Bahamas Islands flamed into an inferno and sank in the Atlantic Ocean, forcing panic stricken passengers to flee over the side in pyjamas and evening clothes. Up to 100 persons have been reported missing.

Confusion was so great even hours after the Yarmouth Castle sank that there was still no accurate count of survivors. These was a good possibility that many of the missing would turn up on rescue ships.

Most of the survivors were picked up by the Bahama Star, another cruise ship, and the Finnish motor ship, the Finnpulp.

The 365-foot Yarmouth Castle hissed to the bottom in 400-fathoms of water, shooting flames and sheets of steam 150 feet into the air of the pre-dawn sky.

Coast Guard officials in Miami said no distress signal had been received from the stricken ship, and but for the fact that other ships were in the area, it could have been one of the greatest marine disasters in history.

The cause of the fire is not known. The ship is of Panamanian registry and is owned by the Yarmouth Cruise Lines of Miami, Florida.

Survivors described the fire and sinking of the ship as horrible experiences.
