  • Description

Juan Carlos Ongania was deposed as President of Argentina on Monday (8 June) when the country's military chiefs took over power in a swift but bloodless coup.

Troops surrounded the Presidential Palace in Buenos Aires when President Ongania at first resisted a decision by the armed forces commanders to replace him, however after consulting his aides he decided to leave peacefully. It was not immediately obvious whether he had changed his mind or whether the armed forces were becoming impatient over his continued presence in the seat of Government.

The three-man military junta seized power from the 56-year-old "strongman" general in little more than six hours, after he had rejected their plan to return Argentina to constitutional rule.

Large crowds, earlier dispersed by police teargas, gathered outside the Presidential Palace awaiting ex-President Ongania's departure, and when several ex-Ministers of the regime left after hurried consultations they were given a rough reception. Meanwhile helicopters waited on the Palace roof, apparently ready to whisk the ex-president's party off to an undisclosed destination.
