Background: The military trial of sixteen Basque nationalists ended in Burgos, northern Spain, today. Wednesday. At the end of the week-long hearing, the prosecutor confirmed his demand for the death sentence for six of the accused. They are charged with the murder of a police chief at San Sebastian in August 1968. For the other ten, accused of various degrees of complicity, he has called for prison sentences totalling 754 years.
The proceedings in Burgos were interrupted today when two of the prisoners attempted to reach the military judges' table. They were dragged away by police officers shouting Basque national slogans. Other prisoners began to sing Basque songs. The court was cleared.
The defence lawyers waived their rights to call witnesses and sum up for the defence. Instead they handed in copies of their defence speeches protesting that they had been coerced and that they had been denied adequate facilities for defending their clients.
The five military judges have now retired to consider their verdict. It is thought that their consideration might take two or three days.
