  • Description

At Military Training Centres in Formosa young Chinese women have become a prominent feature. They are members of the Woman's Army Corps. The first of them enlisted in 1949 in Chiang's Army just before the fall of Shanghai.

Once in two years the recruitment of W.A.C.S. is made all over Formosa. The young recruits go through the military training just like men...physical training, parades, shooting drills and all. Training over, the girls enlist as regular W.A.C.S. to serve two to four years. But marriage still dominates the thoughts of these girls and many of them quit the services sooner or later for setting up homes.

While on service the girls do many jobs specially suited to them...writing letters for soldiers in hospitals, reading letters from them from home, and work as nurses, announcers in radio and entertainers of troops. The W.A.C.S. have also been in active service, especially in 1958 at the height of Quemoy Battle.
