  • Description

The United States and the Soviet Union traded accusations today (24 May) in a short session of the Security Council on the crisis in the Dominican Republic.

The Russians renewed their demand for Security Council condemnation of U.S. "aggression" against the Dominican Republic.

The U.S. withdrew its own resolution on the Dominican crisis declaring that the aims of the measure had been accomplished by other action of the Organization of American States and the United Nations.

The measure had been interpreted by qualified diplomatic sources as an effort to make the U.N. peace effort in the Dominican Republic subordinate to OAS activities. It had been regarded as certain to gain a Soviet veto.

Stevenson said in light of actions taken by the council and the OAS, the resolution was no longer timely.

Federenko said the OAS force in the Dominican Republic was simply "an attempt to cover up American aggression" there.
