    THE BECHUANALAND INDEPENDENCE CONFERENCE FORMALLY OPENED IN LONDON TODAY (MONDAY). PRIME MINISTER, MR. SERETSE KHAMA, TOLD THE CONFERENCE THAT HIS GOVERNMENT WANTED TO ESTABLISH A NON-RACIAL SOCIETY IN WHICH EACH INDIVIDUAL WOULD HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS.

    THE CONFERENCE IS MAPPING A NEW CONSTITUTION TO PREPARE THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN PROTECTORATE AND ITS 550,000 PEOPLE FOR INDEPENDENCE WHICH IS PROVISIONALLY SET FOR SEPTEMBER 30.

    PRIME MINISTER KHAMA WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME THE COUNTRY'S FIRST PRESIDENT WHEN IT EMERGES AS AN INDEPENDENT COMMONWEALTH REPUBLIC RENAMED BOTSWANA.

    LORD LONGFORD, BRITAIN'S COLONIAL SECRETARY, PLEDGED CONTINUED BRITISH FINANCE AND ECONOMIC HELP FOR THE NEW REPUBLIC.

    BECHUANALAND, SPREADING OVER AN AREA OF 222,000 SQUARE MILES (577,000 SQUARE KMS), IS LARGER THAN FRANCE. FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS IT HAS BEEN STRICKEN BY DROUGHT THAT HAS WIPED OUT ABOUT A QUARTER OF ITS CATTLE. RESULTANT FAMINE CONDITIONS ARE WIDESPREAD.

    CONFERENCE DELEGATES PREDICTED THERE WOULD BE LITTLE DIFFICULTY IN REACHING AGREEMENT ON THE INDEPENDENCE PROPOSALS.
