  • Description

In Tunis on Monday (20 February) the Economic Council of the Arab League began three days of talks to review the monetary polices of the twenty member countries.

SYNOPSIS: The talks were held in the Hilton Hotel in the capital, Tunis. Mr. Hedi Nouira, the Tunisian Prime Minister, was there to welcome the delegations from the other member countries -- which include the powerful oil-rich states of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

It was the 24th meeting of the Economic Council. The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Mr. Mahmoud Raid was there. The council was set up to compare and co-ordinate economic policies.

One of the main topics of discussion centred on a report setting out ways of creating an Arab financial and monetary market. This could mean using the Arab dinar as a basis for transaction between countries belonging to the Arab Monetary Fund in order to help the circulation of capital in the Arab world.
