Background: Warm spring sunshine greeted West German Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, as the 84 year-old statesman stepped out to tour Kyoto, Mar 28, on day-three of his week's State visit to Japan.

His party paid a visit to the old Imperial Palace where they admired the famous Shinshinden - structure of the Tang Dynasty style. The West German Chancellor was impressed by Japanese architecture and listened intently to explanations by accompanying Japanese Ambassador to Bonn. Mr Takeuchi.

Later, the 22-car procession headed for Ryuanji Temple in the city's outskirts where Mr Adenauer chatted with the chief priest who invited him to a religious "Zen" session. The German leader told the priest: "I would want to for a whole day if I had the time."
Chancellor Adenauer visited two palaces, two Buddhist Temples and one ancient Shinto shrine where he was served bitter green tea and given rice bread to feed large carp in a beautiful Japanese pond.

In the evening, Mr Adenauer attended a banquet - his bost on this occasion being German Ambassador to Japan, Wilhelm Haas.
