Background: The world's top Formula One racing drivers have been practising at Watkins Glen, New York, for Sunday's (2 October) Toyota Grand Prix. And, according to a poll of American car racing experts, Mario Andretti is favourite to win the race.
SYNOPSIS: Before the race was due to begin, some of the world's top drivers were out in the pits and on the circuit. They included Niki Lauda, who won the Watkins Glen Grand Prix in 1965, and race favourite, Mario Andretti, driving a John Player Lotus. He started his career driving for Lotus in 1968.
James Hunt's Marlboro McLaren being fuelled ....he won the Grand Prix last year.
In practice, no less than seven drivers managed to better last year's winning time of 118.20 miles an hour....that just over 190.22 kilometres an hour...along the twisting circuit.
Niki Lauda, driving car number 11 clocked 117.57 miles an hour ....189.21 kilometres an hour, but James Hunt was fastest with 119.88 miles an hour...that's 192.93 kilometres an hour.
