  • Description

Heavily armed Congolese troops loyal to Colonel Mobutu, and United Nations officers, were on Leopoldville dockside Sept 19 ready to repel a rumoured 'invasion' by troops arriving from Stanleyville, stronghold of Lumumba support.

Fear spread among Africans when a ship carrying some 400 uniformed soldiers arrived from Camp Irebu, near Stanleyville. Rumour had it that they were being brought in by deposed Premier Lumumba to overthrow Mobutu. Dock workers fled, and panic grew when a Congolese soldier accidentally fired a shot in the 'invasion' ship's direction.

Mystified at their warm reception, the 'invasion' troops were revealed to be unarmed recruits arriving to join Colonel Mobutu's forces.

Forming fours, more or less, they marched away to Camp Leopoldville, where they hoped to receive back pay guaranteed by the United Nations.
