    Background: BAN PUI, THAILAND

Hill farmers in Thailand's notorious opium-producing area -- the Golden Triangle -- are still growing poppies from which opium is extracted, despite a Thai government programme to encourage alternative crops. Although opium prices have dropped, it is still a source of rich revenue to the farmers, who sell it to suppliers for refining in jungle laboratories. Western governments have put pressure on the Thai government to stifle this trade, which is the source of the world's heroin drug traffic. Thai farmers now grow kidney beans and coffee on their tiny hill farms, but many still cultivate opium-bearing poppies as their principal cash crop.
