    Helmut Kohl was born at Ludwigshafen in 1930. He is married and has two sons.



    1950 Finished school.



    1950-1958 Studied Law and History at the Universities of Frankfurt and Heidelberg.



    1958-1969 Legal adviser with Chemical Industries Federation, Ludwigshafen.



    1974 Joined CDU.



    1953 Member of Managing Committee of Palatinate branch of the CDU.



    1954 Deputy chairman, for the Rhineland-Palatinate, of the "Young Union" - the CDU's youth organisation.



    1955 Member of the Rhineland-Palatinate executive committee of the CDU.



    1962 Deputy chairman of the Palatinate branch.



    1964 Chairman of the Palatinate branch.



    1964 Member of the Federal Committee of the CDU.



    1966 Chairman, for the Rhineland-Palatinate, of the CDU.



    1969 Deputy National Chairman of the CDU.



    1973 National Chairman of the CDU.



    1960-1967 Chairman of the CDU Councillors of the City of Ludwigshafen.



    1959 Member of the Landtage. (Rhineland-Palatinate parliament)



    1961 Deputy chairman of the CDU parliamentary party in the Rhineland-Palatinate ??? Landtag.



    1963-1969 Chairman of the CDU parliamentary party in the Rhineland-Palatinate Landtag.

    Other notes: At the age of 28, Helmut Kohl was the youngest deputy of the Mainz Landtag. At 39, he was the youngest prime minister of a Federal "Land" and, at 43, the youngest party chairman the CDU ever had.
    On joining the CDU in 1947, at 17, he founded the "Young Union" (see above) with a number of his friends. His doctorate, in 1958, was based on a thesis on the subject of the founding and revival of parties after World War II.
    His first bid for the party leadership, in the autumn of 1971, was foiled by Rainer Brzel. Eighteen months later, Dr Helmut Kohl succeeded him.
