The Monte Carlo Rally: after 2,500 miles of gruelling driving - much of it over hazardous mountain passes and icy roads - drivers started to arrive in Monte Carlo January 24, in bright sunshine.

First arrival at the control point, just after 10 a.m. were P. Condriller and J. Cazon in a Renault (car no. 1) driven from Athens. This final control was situated at the Jardins Exotiques above the town to prevent the dangerous race through crowded streets.

After this, an every increasing stream of vehicles arrived - many drivers appeared extremely fatigued. Others were cheerful and showed little sign of their arduous trip. One hundred and fifty-five cars finished the course within the official time limit. It was an exceptionally high figure from the total of 305 starters.

Of 17 competing countries, France had the highest number of crews successfully through to the finish - a total of 44 cars. Early arrivals from Britain - who were second with 35 cars through - were Pat Moss and Ann Wisdom in an A-40 saloon (car no. 96). They said they had a trouble-free run, and did not think they had any penalty marks.

Many vehicles were heavily damaged from adventures on the route. Three Frenchmen were killed when - after abandoning the Rally - their car hit a tree on the way to Monte Carlo.

Speed tests of the Monte Carlo Rally were to take place on the city's Grand Prix circuit Jan. 26.
