  • Description

As government leaders in both Britain and Rhodesia study the, as yet unpublished Pearce Report, there is mounting speculation about what moves the British Government will take if the report finds the majority of Rhodesians opposed to the settlement terms.

One option open to the British Government is the renewal of sanctions against Rhodesia. An announcement about British intentions is expected in London on Tuesday (23 May).

Critics of Britain's handling of the Rhodesia question since the illegal Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) in 1965 say that sanctions failed to achieve their objective. Figures produced both by the Rhodesian Government and by independent sources outside Rhodesia showed that after more than five years of sanctions, the country still has a viable economy.
