Background: A British aircraft crashed in Belgium on Saturday (October 2), killing all 63 people on board. There were 55 passengers, most of them British, and a crew of eight, The aircraft, a jet-prop Vanguard of British european Airways, was bound for Salzburg in Austria. It crashed one hour after toking off form London's Heathrow airport.

Early reports differ as to what happened. Some Belgian Police reports say the aircraft exploded in mid-air, Other eye witnesses say it blew up impact with the ground.

SYNOPSIS: A British aircraft plunged to the ground in Belgium on Saturday, killing all 63 people on board. Burning wreckage was scattered over several miles. There were 55 passengers. mostly British, and a crew of eight. The aircraft, a jet-prop Vanguard belonging to British European Airways, was bound for Salzburg in Austria on direct flight form London's Heathrow airport. The horror crash occurred near Deinze, in north west Belgium, when the aircraft plunged into a field and burst into flames. Some police reports said it had lost a wing in a mid-air explosion, but conflicting eyewitness reports said it only exploded as it hit the ground. Minutes before the disaster, the pilot had radioed Brussels, but an airport spokesman there said there was no indication that he was in trouble. An investigation into the accident is taking place to try and establish the cause.
