    ABOUT TWO THOUSAND PEOPLE LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY) MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF ROME PROTESTING AGAINST UNITED STATES INTERVENTION IN VIETNAM AND THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. HUNDREDS OF POLICE WERE ON DUTY ALONG THE ROUTE, BUT NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED.

    AMONG THE MARCHERS WERE MEMBERS OF COMMUNIST AND OTHER LEFT-WING ORGANISATIONS. THE LEADER OF THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY HAS JUST RETURNED FROM A VISIT TO NORTH VIETNAM. HE SAID THAT ITALIANS WOULD GO TO NORTH VIETNAM AS VOLUNTEERS IF HANOI REQUESTED THEM. HE ALSO SAID THAT THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY WAS RAISING MONEY FOR A FIELD HOSPITAL TO BE SENT TO VIETNAM.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED BANNERS CONDEMNING AMERICAN ACTION. THEY CARRIED SLOGANS SUCH AS "PEACE AND LIBERTY FOR VIETNAM", AND "JOHNSON IS AN EXECUTIONER".
