  • Description

VISNEWS filmed at Mussoorie, India June 20 - when the Dalai Lama, God-King of Tibet, met representatives of the World's Press for the first time since talking refuge in India.

The conference was held under a shamiana - a canopy of gaily coloured cloth - on the lawns of Birla Nivas, the Dalai Lama's present home in exile.

Correspondents, who crowded round him in anything but orderly style, had previously submitted questions - 94 in all- and their host, seated before a forest of microphones, read him replies from a prepared folio.

Speaking in Tibetan, - immediately translated into English, he said he would never return to Lhasa, his own Capital in Tibet, until his countrymen enjoyed the same freedom they had before the 1950 invasion by Chinese Reds.

He repudiated the 1951 China-Tibet agreement which, he said, had been forced upon him at bayonet point. He listed the sufferings of his people at the hands of the Chinese, who were carrying on a reign of terror almost to the point of exterminating all Tioetans.

In view of India's neutrality, which he could not ignore, he could only appeal for their help to restore the situation by peaceful means. He had no intention of remaining permanently in India, but would possibly visit other countries to seek aid.

When all questions had been answered, the Dalai Lama read a prepared statement in Tibetan, and when this too had been translated, he rose and smilingly bade farewell to the correspondents saying "We will meet again."
