  • Description

Every year this Monday after Carnival Sunday, thousands of people from all over the country rush to Thivai (Thebes) to assist at the traditional popular wedding which is taking place in complete couleur locale. This custom is a slightly changed three-thousand-year old one having its deep provenance from the ancient Dionysian Mysteries of Thebes (Note: Dionysus the God of Wine was born in Thebes) and symbolizing the fertility the blossom and the fruitfulness. All of the funny stepping and movements performed by the Thebian dancers (young and old) during the celebrations which follow the wedding as well as the cries and toasts they were uttering were all bound to Dionysus or (Bacchus) thus proving the tradition's undoubtful old provenance. The costumes the Thebians were wearing during the wedding celebrations as well as the "pistolas", knives and swords, were of some two-three-hundred-year-old, representing local dresses of Macedonia, Attica and Crete, with colourful and wonderful rich golden broderies and real old gold coins sewed all around the front.
