  • Description

TROOPS, BANDS AND EQUIPMENT OF THE BRITISH, FRENCH AND UNITED STATES FORCES TOOK PART IN THE ANNUAL ALLIED FORCES DAY PARADE TODAY (17 MAY) ON WEST BERLIN'S STRASSE DES 17 JUNI. ABOUT 250 MILITARY VEHICLES AND SEVEN MILITARY BANDS WERE ON PARADE. MORE THAN 3,000 SOLDIERS MARCHED PAST THE REVIEWING STAND WHERE THE ALLIED COMMANDERS TOOK THE SALUTE.

ONE OF THE MOST COLOURFUL EVENTS IN THE CITY, THE PARADE ATTRACTED A CROWD OF ABOUT 30,000 PEOPLE THIS YEAR. THE PARADE ROUTE TOOK THE TROOPS AND BANDS PAST THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY WHERE LEFT-WING STUDENTS WERE CHANTING ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS AND WAVING RED FLAGS. A HUGE LOUD-SPEAKER BLARED THE SOCIALIST INTERNATIONALE FROM THE UNIVERSITY COMPOUND AND DROWNED THE MUSIC OF THE MILITARY BANDS.

AMONG THE UNITS TAKING PART IN THE PARADE WERE THE AMERICAN 6TH INFANTRY, FORMED IN 1812, THE GENDARMERIE, THE OLDEST UNIT OF THE FRENCH ARMY, AND BRITAIN'S GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT, WHICH HAS BEEN A FIGHTING UNIT SINCE 1694.
