    MR. PATTAKOS, THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER IN THE GREEK MILITARY GOVERNMENT, ON WEDNESDAY, VISITED THE TWO ISLANDS IN THE AEGEAN SEA, WHICH WERE DEVASTATED BY TUESDAY'S EARTHQUAKE. THE QUAKE WHICH WAS FELT STRONGLY THROUGHOUT GREECE, KILLED 20 PEOPLE AND INJURED AT LEAST 40, ON THE ISLANDS OF LEMNOS AND AYIOS EFSTRATIOS.

    THE EPICENTRE OF THE EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED CLOSE TO THE ISLAND'S AND ABOUT 2,000 HOUSES WERE DAMAGED. ALL THE HOUSES ON AYIOS EFSTRATIOS COLLAPSED AND THE ISLAND'S POPULATION OF 700 SPENT THE FIRST NIGHT IN THE OPEN.

    RESCUE AND RELIEF WORK BEGAN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AND THE RESIDENTS ARE NOW HOUSED IN TENT COLONIES ON THE ISLANDS. SHIPS AND AIRCRAFT WERE SHUTTLING BETWEEN THE ISLANDS AND THE GREEK MAINLAND WITH BLANKET, TENTS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND FOOD.

    MR. PATTAKOS, DURING HIS TOUR OF THE ISLANDS, TOLD THE SURVIVORS THAT THE GREEK GOVERNMENT WILL ARRANGE DIRECT RESTITUTION OF THE DAMAGES AND CARE OF THE STRICKEN RESIDENTS, WITH A PARTY OF GOVERNMENT MINISTERS, THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER INSPECTED THE DEVASTATED AREAS AND MET MANY OF THE RESIDENTS, INCLUDING THOSE INJURED IN THE EARTHQUAKE. HE URGED THE ISLANDERS TO HAVE FAITH IN THE GOVERNMENT.
