TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: "John, what do you think about the training and relaxing conditions out here?"

WALKER: "Well, I think they probably contribute to half the reason and breaking the world record. We've been very fortunate staying out here with Kurt Loren and his wife, and as you can see by the background the beautiful conditions here and the water and the tracks for running on. The thing is that its meant that we haven't had to race so much this year and we've been able to just sit here and relax and be away from everybody else, sort of athletes and hotels and I think its probably contributed a lot."

REPORTER: "More than twenty years ago, twenty one exactly, Roger Bannister broke the four minute barrier for the mile, a lot of runners did follow him, do you think the same story will happen all over again?"

WALKER: "I think people have just been waiting for somebody to break the three fifty. I said in America in a TV interview this year that somebody would break the world record this year, I wasn't quite sure who it would be I thought I had a chance or Bayi, but Bayi went out and did it first.....I didn't dream of breaking the three-fifty barrier this year. But you know, its something that you do dream about and just don't realise until it actually happens. What's going to happen in the next two or three years is anybody's guess.

REPORTER: "Now you've got the fifteen hundred metres, do you think it's possible to break another world record?"

WALKER: "Physically I feel in great shape but mentally I'm a little jaded so I just hope that I can get some good sleep in the next two or three days and see what happens. I wouldn't guarantee on me running fast, but we don't know what's going to happen."

    REPORTER: "Yes, you look tired."

WALKER: "I feel very tired, I assure you."

REPORTER: "Bayi, is he afraid of meeting you?"

WALKER: "No, I wouldn't say that at all I don't know why Bayi hasn't been in Europe. Originally when I was in New Zealand they said that he would be here for an extra thirteen races and I thought it would be tremendous to be able to come over here and run against Bayi and I said to my coach before we came away from New Zealand that my main aim this year was to reduce my mile time and that's what I've done, but I wouldn't say Bayi is afraid of me at all, no."

Background: New Zealand's world mile record holder John Walker is aiming to add the world 1500 metres record and a victory over Tanzania's Filbert Bayi to his impressive list of titles, before next year's Montreal Olympics.

Walker became the first man ever to break three minutes fifty seconds for the mile, when he clocked a sizzling 3.49.4 in Gothonburg, Sweden on Tuesday (12 August).

He clipped 1.6 seconds off Bay's previous world record.

Walker has also recorded very fast times for the 1500 metres journey. A fortnight ago, he ran only two-tenths of a second outside the world record.

He says he wants to lower that record and beat the man who holds it, Bayi, in a race in the near future.
