  • Description

THE AUSTRALIAN AIRCRAFT CARRIER "MELBOURNE" ENTERED DRY DOCK IN SINGAPORE YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FOR THE REPAIRS TO THE BOW GASHED IN LAST TUESDAY'S (JUNE 3) COLLISION WITH THE U.S. DESTROYER" FRANK E. EVANS" - TUGS NUDGED HER INTO THE DOCK AT THE BRITISH NAVAL BASE THIS MORNING AND BY NIGHTFALL SHE WAS SITTING ON HER KEEL.

THE 25,000-TON CARRIER SLICED THE AMERICAN DESTROYER IN TWO DURING EXERCISES IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA WITH THE LOSS OF 73 LIVES. IT WAS THE THIRD TIME SHE HAD COLLIDED WITH ANOTHER SHIP.

TODAY WAS THE FIRST TIME CAMERAS HAD A CHANCE TO FILM BELOW HER WATERLINE. THE DAMAGE CONSISTS OF A LARGE DIAMOND-SHAPED HOLE, A SLIGHT GASH AND SEVERAL TINY HOLES PUNCTURED IN THE KEEL.

IT WAS NOT KNOWN WHETHER THE CARRIER WILL UNDERGO COMPLETE REPAIRS IN SINGAPORE OR JUST UNDERGO A PARTIAL REFIT AND THEN RETURN TO SYDNEY TO HAVE THE JOB COMPLETED.

MEMBERS OF THE COURT OF INQUIRY INTO THE COLLISION, MEETING IN THE PHILIPPINES, ARE FLYING TO SINGAPORE TONIGHT TO INSPECT THE DAMAGE.
