Background: THIRTY-NINE BARGES OF THE THAI ROYAL FLEET WERE ROWED IN PROCESSION ON BANGKOK'S LARGEST RIVER, CHAO PHYA, AS PART OF THE ANCIENT CEREMONY WHICH MARKS THE END OF THE BUDDHIST LENT IN THAILAND ON FRIDAY. THE OARSMEN WERE ALL DRESSED IN ANCIENT THAI COSTUMES.

KING BHUMIPOL RODE IN THE ROYAL BARGE, THE HULL OF WHICH INTRICATELY CARVED AND PAINTED IN RICH GOLD AND BLACK. THE INTERIOR IS RED. THE KING WAS PROTECTED FROM THE BLAZING SUN BY SEVEN CANOPY BEARERS.

ALL THE ROYAL BARGES ARE HEAVILY GILDED AND THEIR BOWS ARE CARVED WITH VARIOUS FIGUREHEADS. EACH IS ABOUT FIFTY FEET LONG; FIVE FEET WIDE; AND ABOUT TWO FEET DEEP AND TAKES ABOUT FIFTY OARSMEN TO PROPEL IT ALONG. ON EACH BARGE THERE IS A FLAGMAN AND BOAT SONGSTER WHO CHANTS TO THE RHYTHM OF THE OARSMEN'S STROKES.

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND BUDDHIST PRIESTS WELCOMED THE KING AS HE STEPPED ASHORE AT THE WAT ARUN PAGODA, WHERE HE WAS PRESENTED WITH A PARCEL CONTAINING A MONK'S ROBE, BEFORE ENTERING THE PAGODA TO PARTICIPATE IN A RELIGIOUS CEREMONY. AFTER THE CEREMONY, THE KING RETURNED TO HIS BARGE FOR THE RETURN JOURNEY.
