Cuba continues to embroil the United States in international tensions... Today's (SEPT. 25) developments included the announcement that Russia will build a fishing port in Cuba, the decision by Great Britain not to participate in any trade embargo or blockage of Cuba, and the Cuban charge that the U.S. has again violated Cuba's airspace.
One focal point of dispute between Cuba and the United States is the American Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. United States Marines check the security passes of Cuban workers as they arrive at the base in the morning. Many of the workers are assigned to the ship's repair depot...where major and minor repairs are performed on equipment from the American fleet's ??? warships. But U-S ships are not the only vessels found in Caribbean waters these days. Russian cargo ships...laden with military supplies...are docking daily at Cuban ports. This freighter gets an unrequested escort from an American destroyer in the background. Cargo is lashed to the deck of the Soviet ship...including thirteen heavy trucks, two small trucks and five mobile cranes...the type used in a construction work. Its destination was not disclosed. at Guantanamo, workers leaving the base at the end of the day undergo the second of their ??? security checks... The main purpose of the search is not to prevent stealing...??? but to protect the employees from taking anything that might get them into trouble at the more intensive shakedown on the Cuban side of the main gate.
