  • Description

MR. IAN SMITH, THE PRIME MINISTER OF RHODESIA, SET AN EXAMPLE FOR FELLOW-RHODESIANS BY BUYING FIVE POUNDS (STERLING) WORTH OF HIS BREAKAWAY GOVERNMENT'S NEW INDEPENDENCE BONDS WHEN THEY WENT ON SALE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON TUESDAY (1ST FEBRUARY).

MR. SMITH STROLLED FROM HIS OFFICE IN THE CITY CENTRE TO BUY THE BONDS AT A POST OFFICE SAVINGS BANK ACROSS THE ROAD.

ASKED TO COMMENT ON THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S REFUSAL TO PAY RHODESIA'S DEBTS AND WHETHER HE THOUGHT THIS WOULD AFFECT SALES OF THE BONDS, HE SAID, "I THINK MOST RHODESIANS RECOGNISE THAT OUR RECORD OF HONOURING OUR DEBTS IS BETTER THAN THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S....."
THE INDEPENDENCE BONDS, WHOSE ISSUE WAS ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK, WILL ACCRUE INTEREST AT THE RATE OF FOUR-AND-A-HALF PER CENT AND MATURE IN THREE YEARS.
