Background: AT GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, WEST GERMANY, WHERE 15 TEAMS REPRESENTING 10 COUNTRIES TOOK PART IN THE WORLD FOUR-MEN BOBSLEIGH CHAMPIONSHIPS ON JAN 29TH, VICTORY WENT TO THE WEST GERMAN NO. 1 TEAM PILOTED BY FRANZ SCHELLE. TOTAL TIME TAKEN FOR THE TWO RUNS OVER THE MILE-LONG OLYMPIC COURSE WITH ITS SIXTEEN, STEEL-HARD CURVES, WAS 2 MINS 33.66 SECS. OTHER MEMBERS OF THE WINNING GERMAN CREW WERE OTTO GOEBL, JOSEF STERFF AND LUDWIG SIEBERT.

A SUDDEN DROP IN THE TEMPERATURE ENABLED THE CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE HELD AFTER SEVERAL POSTPONEMENTS. THE COURSE WAS FROZEN SOLID AND BECAME INCREASINGLY FAST AS THE COMPETITION WENT ON.

THE GERMAN TEAM, AFTER BEING FRACTIONALLY BEHIND ITALY'S NO. 1 TEAM TOOK FIRST PLACE WITH A FASTER TIME ON THEIR SECOND RUN. ITALY FINISHED SECOND WITH A TOTAL TIME FOR 2MINS 34.23 SECS. PILOTING THE BOBSLEIGH WAS SEPGOO ZARDINI. HIS CREW MEMBERS WERE: ROMANO BONAGURA, FERRUCIO DALLA TORRE AND ENRICO DE LORENZO. THE AUSTRIAN NO. 1 TEAM, COMPOSED OF THE FOUR ISSER BROTHERS - FRITZ, HEINI, PEPI AND FRANZ - WERE IN THIRD PLACE WITH A TOTAL OF 2MINS 23.59 SECS. BRITAIN'S NO. 2 BOBSLEIGH, PILOTED BY BILL MCCOWEN, FINISHED NINTH WITH 2MINS 39 SECS AND THE NO. 1 BOBSLEIGH, STEERED BY TONY NASH, FINISHED ELEVENTH WITH A TIME OF 2 MINS 39, 3 SECS.

DESPITE THE HIGH SPEEDS THERE WERE NO SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. THE AUSTRIAN NO. 2 BOBSLEIGH OVERTURNED ON ITS SECOND RUN BUT THE TEAM WERE THROWN CLEAR.
