  • Description

The world's greatest 800 metre runners - Moens (Belgium), Courtney (United States), and Johnson (Great Britain) - clashed in Oslo, Norway, on Thursday, July 31 - and the result was true to the form-book.

The main battle was between Roger Moens - world-record hold over the distance - and Tom Courtney, Olympic 800 metre champion.

Johnson, who ran second to Courtney in the Olympic final, kept in third place throughout the race and finished in 1min 46.9 seconds - the fastest time ever recorded by a British runner over the distance.

Moens, who overtook Courtney in the last few yards, was only three-tenths of a second outside his own world record of 1min 45.7 secs which he set on the Oslo track two years ago.
