  • Description

FIGHTING BETWEEN ARAB AND ISRAELI FORCE CONTINUED YESTERDAY (MONDAY). AN ISRAELI ARMY SPOKESMAN SAID THAT EGYPTIANS USED MORTARS AND AUTOMATIC WEAPONS IN A 20-MINUTE DUEL THAT BEGAN SHORTLY AFTER DAWN. THEIR TARGET WAS AN ISRAELI FORCE NORTH OF QANTARA IN SINAI. AT QANTARA A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN FILMED AN ISRAELI PATROL RETURNING FROM PORT FOUAD WHERE THEY HAD SPENT TWO NIGHTS AND THREE DAYS UNDER HEAVY FIRE.

THERE HAS BEEN NO COMMENT ON THE NEW SKIRMISH FROM EGYPT, BUT CAIRO RADIO SAID YESTERDAY THAT THE ISRAELIS HAD ATTEMPTED TO TAKE PORT FOUAD IN THE WEEKEND FIGHTING.

THE RADIO CLAIMED THEY HAD WITHDRAWN TO QANTARA AFTER LOSING SIX TANKS AND NINE ARMOURED CARS. PORT FOUAD FACES PORT SAID ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE CANAL. EGYPT SAYS IT HAS HAD TROOPS IN DEFENSIVE POSITIONS AROUND THE PORT SINCE LAST MONTH'S ARAB-ISRAELI FIGHTING.

ISRAEL SAID THE MAIN CLASH -- A FIVE HOUR BATTLE ON SATURDAY -- CAME AFTER 100 EGYPTIAN TROOPS CROSSED THE CANAL AND TRIED TO ESTABLISH A POSITION ON THE EASTERN BANK. THIS FORCE WAS OUSTED, SAY THE ISRAELIS.

BOTH SIDES HAVE COMPLAINED TO THE UNITED NATIONS.

MEANTIME TROOPS MOVEMENTS HAVE CONTINUED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE DISPUTED CANAL. THE PATROL WHICH RETURNED FROM PORT FOUAD BROUGHT WITH IT MEN WHO HAD BEEN WOUNDED IN THE SKIRMISHING.
