  • Description

The regular Israeli cabinet meeting was postponed for an hour on Sunday (17 August) while the government's negotiating team discussed military and legal matters in relation to a projected peace settlement in the Middle East.

At the meeting, the team, headed by Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin, had its adopted position officially endorsed by the Israeli cabinet, and received instructions to continue negotiations in a similar vein.

Despite an attempt this week by United States' President Gerald Ford to send Dr. Kissinger to Jerusalem to revive his shuttle-diplomacy, the negotiating team and the cabinet still insisted many important questions must be resolved before an interim peace agreement can be reached. Several ministers have opposed Dr. Kissinger's visit.

Sunday's meeting of the negotiating team was attended by the Israeli Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Gershon Avner, who made a brief statement before ministers left for the Knesset (Parliament).

A transcript of his statement follows:-
"The cabinet adopted the position which the negotiating team had transmitted to the government of the United States, including the Israeli position with regard to a number of important subjects regarding which agreement had not yet been reached. The cabinet authorised the negotiating team to continue negotiations on the basis of these positions which, as mentioned above, were adopted by the cabinet."
