  • Description

President Idi Amin of Uganda on Tuesday (16 October) said many Ugandans had volunteered to join in the Middle East fighting on the Arab side. These, he added, included troops, civilians and even women, who wanted to fight the Israelis.

General Amin was speaking at a news conference in Damascus, on the fourth leg of a Middle East tour. Earlier he had held talks in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan. He said the purpose of his tour was to brief the people of Africa on the Middle East situation.

He promised to send Ugandan troops as soon as he returned home. On the first day of the war, General Amin ordered all Ugandan soldiers training in Egypt and Libya to join in the fighting.

His stay in the Syrian capital coincided with heavy air activity around the city, and he was taken to visit wounded Israeli pilots in hospital.
