  • Description

British officials in Kampala on Monday (28 August) began issuing entry permits to the first of some ten thousand Asian families who are to be expelled from Uganda on orders from President Idi Amin.

In the first hour, sixteen families received entry permits but the rate speeded up later in the day.

Some people had to be turned away because of a misunderstanding about who was to be processed on the first day.

The first three thousand families to be processed for vouchers applied before President Amin's announcement that about 60,000 Asians would have to leave Uganda by November 7. It's expected this group will take about three weeks to deal with and then other applicants will be processed.
