  • Description

Kenya's five top walkers battled it out on Sunday (2 December) to win a place in the national team that goes to Christchurch, New Zealand for next year's Commonwealth Games.

It will be Kenya's first entry in the walking event, introduced at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. That year, the event, was won by Britain's R. Wallwork in a time of 2 hours 44 minutes over a distance of 20 miles (32 kilometres).

Although there was no qualifying standard time for the walking event, Kenya Amateur Athletic Association officials said they would only consider athletes who finished the 20 mile course (32 kms.) in under three hours.

Despite the three-hour-limit, the first walker home, Eliud Kasuku, clocked in with a time of 3 hours 9 minutes 40.4 seconds. Kasuku had taken the lead early in the marathon walk.
