  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNEDY, ON THE THIRD DAY OF HIS WEST GERMAN TOUR, FLEW FROM BONN BY HELICOPTER TODAY (TUESDAY) TO REVIEW A MASS PARADE OF TROOPS AT A MILITARY BASE NEAR FRANKFURT. WITH HIM WAS WEST GERMANY'S VICE-CHANCELLOR LUDWIG ERHARD.

A 21-GUN SALUTE CRASHED OUT AS THE PRESIDENT WALKED TO THE REVIEWING STAND WITH GENERAL LEMNITZER, SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER IN EUROPE. STANDING IN AN OPEN CAR, PRESIDENT KENNEDY THEN INSPECTED 15,000 U.S. AND NATO TROOPS DRAWN UP BEFORE RANKS OF MECHANIZED ARMOUR.

AN ESTIMATED 100,000 GERMAN CIVILIANS WATCHED THE PARADE AS PRESIDENT KENNEDY SLOWLY ROUND THE FORMATIONS OF TROOPS. LATER, HE DROVE THROUGH CROWDED STREETS TO FRANKFURT. ANTI-NUCLEARIST DEMONSTRATORS WITH BANNERS WERE AMONG ONLOOKERS WHEN HE ARRIVED IN THE CITY. SEVERAL WERE ARRESTED BY POLICE.

IN THE MAJOR SPEECH OF HIS VISIT TO THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC, PRESIDENT KENNEDY MADE ONE OF HIS STRONGEST PLEAS YET FOR UNITY IN THE WESTERN ALLIANCE -- MILITARY, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL. HE SAID:
(TOMORROW, PRESIDENT KENNEDY FLIES TO WEST BERLIN WHERE HE WILL INSPECT THE BERLIN WALL BEFORE FLYING TO DUBLIN TO START HIS TOUR OF EIRE.)
