DROUGHT AND FAMINE ARE THREATENING TRIBESMEN AND CROPS IN KENYA. THE SEASONAL RAINS WHICH WERE?

  • Description

DROUGHT AND FAMINE ARE THREATENING TRIBESMEN AND CROPS IN KENYA. THE SEASONAL RAINS WHICH WERE DUE IN MARCH HAVE FAILED AND SO FAR NO FALLS OF ANY SIGNIFICANCE HAVE BEEN RECORDED.

ONE OF THE WORST AFFECTED AREAS IS AROUND SELENGAI IN MASAILAND. THE FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE HAS BEEN TOURING THE DISTRICT TO EXAMINE THE MASAI TRIBESMEN FOR ANY SIGNS OF MALNUTRITION.

THE MAIN COMPLAINT FROM THE MASAI IS THAT THE CATTLE ARE NOT GIVING SUFFICIENT MILK. AS MILK FORMS A MAJOR PART OF THE MASAI DIET, THE PROBLEM IS CAUSING A GREAT DEAL OF CONCERN IN GOVERNMENT CIRCLES.

THE MAIZE CROPS IN THE AREA HAVE ALREADY FAILED BUT THERE ARE REPORTED TO BE SUFFICIENT STOCKS IN THE COUNTRY TO SUPPLY OUTLYING DISTRICT SHOULD THE NEED ARISE.

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FEAR THE DROUGHT WILL HIT HARD IF RAIN DOESN'T FALL IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS. ACCORDING TO THE KENYAN METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT THERE'S VERY LITTLE PROSPECT OF RAIN IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

DROUGHTS IN KENYA ARE BELIEVED TO RUN IN 10-YEAR CYCLES. THE LAST MAJOR DROUGHT WAS IN 1959.

THE RED CROSS AND OTHER EMERGENCY ORGANISATIONS HAVE BEEN PLACED ON STANDBY AND ARE PREPARING TO MOVE SUPPLIES INTO THE AREA.
