  • Description

World steeplechase record holder, Ben Jipcho of Kenya came up with a bustling burst of speed to snatch the one mile (1609 metres) race from New Zealander Dick Quax at the Crystal Palace, London, UK on Friday (14 September).

The meeting was organised by the International Athletes' Club and sponsored by Coca-Cola.

The race had started out tamely and it wasn't until the last 220 yards (metres) that the action hotted up. Dick Quax, who'd been dogging Ben Jipcho, suddenly sprinted past the Kenyan, seemingly catching him unawares.

But Jipcho was not to be denied victory. He came back strongly, turning a burst of speed that carried him past Quax and storming to the tape. His last lap was under 57-seconds. His time for the mile, 3 minutes 56.2 seconds. Quax was only two-tenths of a second behind.

The tables were turned in the 400-metres (yards) race when David Jenkins, a big British hope, beat Charles Asati of Kenya. The tough little Kenyan twice broke away from Jenkins, but the British runner fought back and made up the deficit. It was neck and neck until about 50 yards (metres) from the tape when Jenkins opened his lead to win convincingly in 46.1 seconds. The Kenyan's time was 46.4 seconds.
