AT DELPHI YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), KING CONSTANTINE OF GREECE LAID THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE FIRST MODERN EUROPEAN CULTURAL CENTRE.

    DELPHI, WITH ITS ANCIENT OPEN-AIR THEATRE AND TEMPLE OF APOLLO, WAS ALSO THE HOME OF THE FAMOUS DELPHIC ORACLES WHO, ENTRANCED, SPOKE THE WILL OF APOLLO -- INFLUENCING NOT ONLY ORDINARY INDIVIDUALS BUT ALSO THE ACTIONS OF GREECE AND ROME AT THEIR MOST POWERFUL THROUGH THEIR EMPERORS, KINGS AND STATESMEN. THE PRIESTS AND PRIESTESSES OF DELPHI, A "MOUTH-PIECE" OF APOLLO, HAD FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS AN INCALCULABLY ENORMOUS INFLUENCE ON THE COURSE OF WESTERN HISTORY.

    YESTERDAY AMBASSADOR TO GREECE FROM BRITAIN, FRANCE, ITALY, AUSTRIA, SPAIN, BELGIUM, DENMARK AND CYPRUS GATHERED AT DELPHI TO WATCH KING CONSTANTINE LAY THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE NEW EUROPEAN CULTURAL CENTRE ON A 100-ACRE SITE DONATED BY THE GREEK GOVERNMENT. SPONSORED BY THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE, THE CENTRE WILL CONSIST OF TWO GROUPS OF BUILDINGS AND COST 25,000,000 GREEK DRACHMAES (ABOUT GBP300,000 STERLING) DONATED JOINTLY BY THE GREEK GOVERNMENT AND COUNCIL OF EUROPE.

    THE CENTRE, EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETE WITHIN TWO YEARS, WILL BE USED FOR MUSIC FESTIVALS AND OTHER CULTURAL EVENTS, MEETINGS OF SPECIALISTS ON EUROPEAN CIVILISATION, AND EUROPEAN YOUTH MEETINGS.
